Stellar performance of blockbuster anime ‘Your Name’ has picked up Japan’s box office takings to a high record in 2016.
With the smash hit animation named one of top-earning films in Japan, the overall revenue for both Japanese and foreign films amounted to 235.5 billion yen (USD 2.08 billion), according to Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan.
New data released by the association showed the latest figure for box office takings broke the previous record of 220.7 billion yen registered in 2010.
The data also releaved 180.2 million cinema admissions were registered in 2016.
Animation ‘Your Name’ is a body-swapping story by director Makoto Shinkai gained 23.6 billion yen (USD 205 million) followed by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ with 11.6 billion yen (around USD 100.1 million).
